The Vision
Safe, secure housing has been consistently identified as one of the most important aspects of successful recovery. MMHA is hoping to be able to fulfill this need this year. We are requesting funding from the state to open a transitional housing program designed specifically to meet the needs of women leaving a life of prostitution.
Incorporating what we have learned from participants and from other transitional housing programs, we will provide safe, semi-structured, drug and alcohol-free housing for women leaving the streets. Resident will be required to pay rent, do their share of the work, and participate in the governing of the house. This includes electing a house representative, attending house meetings, and fostering an atmosphere which allows residents to work through house problems together.
Living in this house will allow women to be surrounded by others who can understand where they have been, and how difficult it is to recover from the abuse, addiction, and psychological harm that comes from being sexually exploited. This type of peer support is critical to building self-esteem and healthy relationships. Additionally, as new household members move in, the veterans will be naturally moved into the role of mentor and role model. This will allow the residents to contribute to the continued success of the program.
As she reaches a level of independence, the structured living situation of the home will no longer suit the happier, stronger, healthier woman. At that point, she will work with her case manager to secure independent housing. At this point, she will pass on the opportunity for another woman to move into the home and begin her journey of recovery.
Last year we recieved an appropriation from the State Legislature to purchase a facility. Thank you to all who called and wrote to your legislators! We are currently looking for a home and hope to purchase one before the end of this year!
It's Working! Get Involved!
